The context

A telecom operator provisioning carrier-grade network elements manually, with every engineer running a slightly different version of the same runbook.

The problem

Provisioning carrier network elements was manual, sequential, and unforgiving — a mistyped parameter surfaced days later as a fault, and every engineer had their own slightly different runbook.

The approach

Turned the runbooks into idempotent Ansible roles under version control, validated in CI against real device configurations before anything reached production. Rollback became a normal operation rather than an incident.

The solution

Runbooks rebuilt as version-controlled, idempotent Ansible roles, validated in CI against real device configurations before anything reached production — so provisioning became a repeatable, testable process instead of a manual one a specific engineer had to execute correctly from memory.

The result

  • Provisioning now runs as version-controlled, idempotent roles — rollback is a normal operation, not an incident.
